Bringing Stories to Life: Creating “Hidden Quest” for Our Unity Animation Tutorial

As children’s book creators, we know the magic of a good story – how a few words and pictures can spark curiosity, emotion, and imagination in young minds. But what happens when we give that magic a new dimension? What if our characters could move, wave, speak, and explore – right on the screen?

That’s the heart of this new tutorial in our Story-Based Game App Series: showing authors and illustrators how to turn a simple story into a living, breathing interactive experience using 2D animations in Unity.

To teach this in a way that feels familiar and inspiring, I wanted to begin just like we do when creating a book: with a story.

Introducing: Hidden Quest

To anchor our animation tutorial, I created a short, four-scene tale called Hidden Quest. Think of it as a digital storybook spread – each page offering a chance to animate, interact, and eventually build out as a game.

Here’s a quick look at the story that will serve as our tutorial’s foundation:

Scene 1: The Castle

In a quiet castle tucked among the hills, a gallery of hidden treasures waits.

Scene 2: The Gallery

Each object holds a forgotten magic. But the key to unlock them has vanished…scattered by time and song.

This scene sets the mood. It’s a mysterious, still room filled with magical items – perfect for animating subtle effects like glows, sparkles, and interaction prompts.

Scene 3 & 4: The Music Boy

Far away in the music-loving town of Songsville, a boy named Femi plays tunes that make the world smile.

One day, a strange note drifts into his melody: ‘Your song can wake the gallery.’ And so, his quest begins…

The third and last scenes introduce our main character, Femi. Here, we’ll animate a simple character loop – like Femi playing an instrument – and add in magical elements like a floating note or spark of light.

Why This Story?

The goal was to craft something:

  • Simple but magical – short enough to build in one tutorial, but rich in atmosphere.
  • Familiar to storytellers – it reads like a page out of a picture book.
  • Open-ended – leaving room for interaction, discovery, and further development.

By animating this story step-by-step, we’ll walk through the core skills needed to animate in Unity bringing still illustrations to life. If you’ve ever wondered how your book could become an app, this is the perfect gateway.

What’s Next

In the upcoming video tutorial, we’ll begin building Hidden Quest in Unity, using simple 2D tools and a storytelling-first approach. You’ll learn:

  • How to animate characters and environments
  • How to trigger animations with interactions
  • How to set up your Unity scene like a digital storybook

Whether you’re an author, illustrator, or both – this is your invitation to step into interactive storytelling.

Let’s bring your stories to life – one scene at a time.
